Für das Projekt und die Ausstellung „under the surface“ fotografierte Bohdana Tkach, die in der Ukraine sowohl als freischaffende Künstlerin als auch als Modefotografin arbeitet, elf Frauen aus Basel, Paris, St. Georgen und Umgebung.
Die dabei entstandenen Aufnahmen hat Tkach eigenhändig als großformatige Arbeiten entwickelt. Dabei griff sie auf die „Cyanotypie“ – eine der ältesten fotografischen Techniken überhaupt – zurück, in der eine Eisenoxidlösung unter intensiven UV-Licht belichtet wird. In der Ausstellung „under the surface“ geht es der Künstlerin im Gegensatz zur schillernden Modewelt darum, hinter die Kulissen, hinter die Oberflächen und Fassaden zu blicken. So sind in den Sessions mit ihren Laien-Models feinfühlige und sehr persönliche Porträts sowie Aufnahmen ihrer Kleidung entstanden. Die Installation ist zudem akustisch um die Stimmen der Frauen ergänzt.
Damit sind die elf internationalen Frauen in der Ausstellung auf vielfältige Weise präsent: Besucher:innen können die Frauen einerseits sehen andererseits hören. Der Blick der Fotografin Bohdana Tkach auf die Frauen ergänzt sich um deren Selbstdarstellung anhand der von ihnen ausgesuchten Kleidungsstücke und des eigenen oder literarischen Textes, den die Frauen für die Ausstellung eingesprochen oder eingesungen haben.
Die Künstlerresidenz von Bohdana Tkach wird durch die großzügige Unterstützung der Stiftung Kunstfonds / die Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien, des Goethe Instituts, der Stadt St. Georgen und dem Regierungspräsidium Freiburg ermöglicht. Die Vermittlungsplattform für Kulturschaffende des Goethe-Instituts in Kooperation mit der internationalen NGO Artists at Risk ist Teil eines umfassenden Maßnahmepakets für welches das Auswärtige Amt Mittel aus dem Ergänzungshaushalt 2022 zur Abmilderung der Folgen des russischen Angriffskrieges gegen die Ukraine bereitstellt.

For her project "under the surface" Bohdana Tkach, who used to work in Ukraine both as a freelance artist and a fashion photographer, met with and took pictures of eleven women from Basel, Paris, St. Georgen, and the surrounding area.
Tkach developed the resulting photographs herself as large-format works. In doing so, she resorted to a technique called "cyanotype" (blueprint) – one of the oldest photographic techniques of all – in which an iron oxide solution is exposed to intense UV light. In the exhibition "under the surface", the artist is concerned with looking behind the scenes, behind the surfaces and facades, contrasting the dazzling world of fashion. Thus, sensitive, and very personal portraits such as photographs of the women’s clothing were created during the shootings with the amateur models. Finally, the installation is acoustically supplemented by the women's voices.
Thus, the eleven international women are present in the exhibition in various ways: visitors can see the women on the one hand and hear them on the other. The view of photographer Bohdana Tkach of the women is complemented by the women's self-portrayal based on their chosen clothing and their own or a literary text, which the women have recorded for the exhibition.
The residency is generously funded by Stiftung Kunstfonds/ Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien, Goethe Institut, the city of St. Georgen, and Regierungspräsidium Freiburg. The Goethe-Institut's matching platform for cultural professionals in cooperation with the international NGO Artists at Risk is part of a comprehensive package of measures for which the Federal Foreign Office is providing funds from the 2022 supplementary budget to mitigate the consequences of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
