Das audiovisuelle Projekt MANDRY entstand in enger Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Pianistin und Komponistin Anna Habruk und der Fotografin bzw. Videokünstlerin Bohdana Tkach. Die beiden Künstlerinnen sind Dank der Kooperation mit der NGO Artist at Risk seit September, bzw. Oktober Residentinnen von Global Forest und arbeiten für einige Monate hier im Schwarzwald.
Das ukrainische Wort MANDRY bedeutet auf deutsch "Streifzüge“.
Und tatsächlich waren „Streifzüge“ und die Erkundung der Region in doppelter Hinsicht Ausgangspunkt für dieses Projekt. Aus Perspektive ihrer jeweils eigenen künstlerischen Sprache näherten sich die beiden Künstlerinnen der natürlichen Umgebung St. Georgens und der Natur im Schwarzwald an. Sie erschlossen sich Orte, sammelten Bilder und Klänge. Als zyklische Reise angelegt, wurde der Film MANDRY so zum durchkomponierten Kondensat dieser Erkundung. Wiederholt durchläuft er die fünf zentralen Themen, Baum, Wasser, Wind, Erde und Sterne, und ruft die Elemente immer wieder auf. Dabei wird jedes Element von jeweils einem Protagonisten, einem Kind begleitet, das stellvertretend mit dem Element in Kontakt tritt und dabei immer wieder unsere menschlichen Wahrnehmungsstereotype aufruft. Das Kind in der Natur wir so mal zum Katalysator und Aktivator von Klang und Bild, mal zur romantischen Projektionsfigur. Es interagiert und macht durch seine Interaktion sicht- und hörbar.
Dabei sind die beiden Medien Klang und Bild eng aufeinander bezogen und schöpfen doch aus ihren wesenseigenen Möglichkeiten: Anna Habruk imitiert einerseits rhythmisch und tonal die Töne der Natur und transponiert stereotype Merkmale der jeweiligen Elemente in Klang. Darüber hinaus verarbeitet sie Aufnahmen aus der Natur, sogenannte Soundscapes, und verknüpft ihre musikalischen Interpretationen von Natur mit kleinen Ready-Made-Klang-Schnipsel aus der Natur. Ähnlich, jedoch im Medium Bild, geht auch Bohdana Tkach vor. Sie folgt den Erkundungen der jeweiligen Protagonisten mit ihrer Kamera und vermittelt damit einen sehr unmittelbaren Eindruck. Andererseits inszeniert auch Tkach sinnbildhafte Situationen und choreografiert die Bewegungen der Kinder.
Wir danken unseren kreativen jungen Mitwirkenden, Erik (Baum), Tymur (Wasser), Luca (Wind), Dania (Erde), Lev (Sterne) und ihren Eltern, ohne die die Produktion dieses Films nicht möglich gewesen wäre. Außerdem den vielen lokalen „guides“ die den Künstlerinnen dabei halfen, die Orte, Klänge und Bilder im Schwarzwald zu finden.
Die Künstlerresidenz von Anna Habruk und Bohdana Tkach wird durch die großzügige Unterstützung der Stiftung Kunstfonds / die Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien, des Goethe Instituts, der Stadt St. Georgen und dem Regierungspräsidium Freiburg ermöglicht. Die Vermittlungsplattform für Kulturschaffende des Goethe-Instituts in Kooperation mit der internationalen NGO Artists at Risk ist Teil eines umfassenden Maßnahmepakets für welches das Auswärtige Amt Mittel aus dem Ergänzungshaushalt 2022 zur Abmilderung der Folgen des russischen Angriffskrieges gegen die Ukraine bereitstellt.

The audiovisual project MANDRY was developed in close cooperation between the pianist and composer Anna Habruk and the photographer and video artist Bohdana Tkach. Thanks to the cooperation with the NGO Artist at Risk, both have been artist-in-residents of Global Forest since September/ respectively October and are since working here in the Black Forest.
The Ukrainian word MANDRY means "rambles" in English.
And indeed, "rambles" and the exploration of the region were the starting point for this project - in two respects. From the specific perspective of their own artistic language, the two artists approached the natural surroundings of St. Georgen and the Black Forest’s nature. They accessed places, collected images, and sounds. Conceived as a cyclical journey, the film MANDRY became a thoroughly composed condensate of this exploration. Repeatedly, it runs through the five central themes, tree, water, wind, earth and stars. Each element is accompanied by a protagonist, a child, who substitutes the interaction with the element and therefore calls up our human stereotypes of perception. The child in nature thus becomes at times a catalyst and activator of sound and image, at times placeholder for projection in the sense of romanticism. The child interacts. It actively makes visible or audible through its interaction.
Within this film, the two media, sound and image, are closely refered to each other and yet draw on their self-inherent possibilities: On the one hand, Anna Habruk rhythmically and tonally imitates the sounds of nature and transposes stereotypical characteristics of the respective elements into sound. In addition, she processes recordings from nature, so-called soundscapes, and therefore links her own musical interpretations of nature with small ready-made like sound snippets from nature itself. Bohdana Tkach proceeds similarly, but in the medium of image. She follows the intuitive explorations of the children with her camera and thus conveys a very immediate impression. On the other hand, Tkach stages emblematic situations and choreographs the children's movements.

Also, the many local "guides" who helped the artists find the places, sounds and images in and of the Black Forest.
The residency is generously funded by Stiftung Kunstfonds/ Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien, Goethe Institut, the city of St. Georgen, and Regierungspräsidium Freiburg. The Goethe-Institut's matching platform for cultural professionals in cooperation with the international NGO Artists at Risk is part of a comprehensive package of measures for which the Federal Foreign Office is providing funds from the 2022 supplementary budget to mitigate the consequences of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
