Im Rahmen seines Aufenthaltes als Artist-in-Residence im Projekt MECHANCIAL FORESTS präsentiert Yann Leguay die Werkserie Hardware (2017–2024).
Die Arbeit besteht aus fünf Steinskulpturen (ca. 30 cm), die alltägliche digitale Objekte darstellen – etwa eine SD-Karte, eine Macintosh-Taste oder ein Cursorsymbol –, die in Reliefs ausgearbeitet sind, als wären sie über die Zeit hinweg fossilisiert.
Zwischen Archäologie und Medienkultur entwerfen diese Arbeiten eine Fiktion zukünftiger Ruinen und reflektieren über technologische Obsoleszenz, beschleunigten Konsum sowie die Verwandlung digitaler Zeichen in Relikte oder Fetische.

Unter dem Titel Hardware hat Yann Leguay eine Serie Objekten aus Stein geschaffen, in der er die symbolische Bedeutung von Ikonografien untersucht. In die Objekte hat er in Hoch- und Flachrelief eine Reihe von multimedialen Geräten und Ikonografien in Originalgröße eingearbeitet, die wirken, als wären sie durch die jahrtausendelange Einwirkung der Natur versteinert: eine SD-Speicherkarte, eine lose Taste einer Macintosh-Tastatur, das pfeilförmige Cursorsymbol oder das FireWire-Icon.
Diese Objekte eröffnen eine archäologische Fiktion, die unterschiedliche Interpretationen zulässt. Beispielsweise die zunehmende Produktion von Abfall in unserer Konsumkultur. Oder eine ironische Perspektive auf das Feld der „Medienarchäologie“: Einmal versteinert, werden tragbare Geräte und die Zeichen, die sich in Computern bewegen, zu sakralen Objekten – genauer gesagt: zu Fetischen.
Die Residenz von Yann Leguay findet im Rahmen des Projekts MECHANCIAL FORESTS statt, einer Kooperation der Donaueschinger Musiktage mit dem Festival Musica (Straßburg) und dem Kunstverein Global Forest. Das Projekt ist Teil des Programms Die Drei Ecken / Les Trois Angles und wird durch Interreg sowie die Europäische Union kofinanziert.

As part of his residency within the MECHANCIAL FORESTS project, Yann Leguay presents the work series Hardware (2017–2024).
Yann Leguay presents the work series Hardware (2017–2024), in relation to his artist-in-residence program Mechanical Forest. The work consists of five carved stone pieces (approx. 30 cm), depicting everyday digital objects, such as an SD card, a Macintosh key, or a cursor symbol, rendered in relief as if fossilized over time. Blending archaeology and media culture, these works suggest a fiction of future ruins, reflecting on technological obsolescence, accelerated consumption, and the transformation of digital symbols into relics or fetishes. The works invite us to reflect on how quickly our technologies become obsolete. At the same time, they playfully suggest that once “fossilized,” these objects can appear like valuable or even ritual artifacts.

Under the title Hardware, he has created a series of carved stones through which he explores this phenomenon from the perspective of symbolic meaning. In them, he sculpted in high and low relief a series of multimedia devices and iconographies at life size, which appear as if fossilized by the millenary action of nature: an SD memory card, a loose key from a Macintosh keyboard, the arrow-shaped cursor symbol, or the FireWire icon, among others. These objects open up an archaeological fiction that allows for multiple interpretations. For example, the accelerated production of ruins in our consumer culture. Or an irony toward the field of “media archaeology”: once petrified, portable devices and the signs that move within computers become sacred objects—more precisely, fetishes.
Yann Leguay’s residency is part of the MECHANICAL FORESTS project, a collaboration between the Donaueschinger Musiktage together with Festival Musica (Straßburg) and the Kunstverein Global Forest. The project is part of the Die Drei Ecken / Les Trois Angles programm and is co-funded by Interreg and the European Union.
